A new remake of the favorite story of many: Ranma 1/2 that is currently streaming on Netflix.
It is the same story with minor variations of Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendou.
In case you don't know the story, the boy's father agrees with the girl's father to marry them, but the boy and the girl don't really agree. The boy turns into a girl when he gets wet with cold water. The girl is perhaps not very feminine because she likes to fight and do boy things. They both end up falling in love, but there are other characters who also want to fall in love with them.
Everything is normal as you can see.
The animation is of a better quality (in digital HD), with more defined strokes and acceptable backgrounds. The colors are perhaps a bit dull or pale, since Ranma girl's red hair is not that red.
But in the case of the Latin Spanish version, I feel that Ranma's voice is a bit different. In the case of Akane, they did try hard to find a similar dub to the original. But don't get me wrong. Obviously we can't expect the dub to be exactly the same as the 1989 series and I'm not saying it's bad since the dubbers did their best but it takes some time getting used to.
I wonder what people will think about the English dub of the anime? (I only have seen the japanese and latin spanish versions)
There are a few small things I didn't like about the "translation." In the original anime, Ranma practices the free fighting style, but in this remake they call it "indiscriminate fighting style." I would say it is the same, they just used synonims.
Another example is when Kuno refers to Ranma as "the girl with the braid" instead of "the girl with the fire hair" but again I guess something similar would happen in the english dub as I am speaking for the spanish translation.
There are also times when we see Genma Saotome's banners on screen when he is turned into a panda but there are no subtitles or audio to help us understand what the panda meant. :(
There are also some subtle changes that I think are nice. For example, when Ranma goes to school to study, he does it wearing a traditional light blue Chinese shirt. I think it's to differentiate him from when he's a boy by leaving out the red color for when he's a girl.
There are also people who think that the situations were funnier in the original anime, but this remake still captures the essence of the series. (There are users who have even started comparing which panels have been removed from the original broadcast.)
For now, we can only enjoy this new installment for the new generations. Right now, in episode 6, Kodachi Kuno - The Black Rose has just appeared.
Shampoo is coming out soon (on Internet forums they say her name in Chinese is Xian Pu but phonetically is Shampoo) and we'll see if Master Happosai makes his appears later.
